In a post today, a U. S. Food and Drug Administration advisory panel has recommended that a new drug on the market for treating pulmonary arterial hypertension, Cialis, be approved by the FDA for sale.
The drug, known generically as tadalafil, is also known as the "Cialis-type drug." That's the name of a drug that's taken by tens of millions of men all over the world.
The drug was approved by the FDA in November. But the FDA recently put out a statement saying it was not clear whether it would be safe for consumers to take. In the statement, FDA's Dr. Michael DiSalvo, chairman and chief executive, said that the drug was being tested in patients who were taking "tadalafil, which is also known as a nitrates drug."
Cialis has been in use for more than a decade and has been approved by the FDA for a number of conditions. Cialis is also used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH).
The FDA approved Cialis in 2003. Cialis was approved for PAH in 2004. In 2006, the drug was approved for treating PAH.
In 2007, a study was published in the medical journal,U. Food and Drug Administration. The researchers analyzed data from more than 6,600 patients in the United States and compared the risk of death or serious adverse events from Cialis to that of the standard treatment for PAH. The researchers found that patients taking tadalafil were at a lower risk of experiencing serious adverse events compared with patients taking the standard treatment. The researchers also noted that the risk of serious adverse events was greater for patients taking the tadalafil in the United States.
As of now, the FDA has not approved Cialis for sale to consumers, but a new advisory panel is expected to be held today.
"This is a very exciting opportunity to examine whether Cialis is safe and whether it may be effective in treating patients who have PAH, or other similar conditions where the risk of cardiovascular events is low," Dr. Steven J. Fuhrman, a professor of medicine at New York University School of Medicine, said in the statement.
In his statement, Fuhrman noted that there is no way of determining if Cialis is safe for consumers to take. "If you take it and your doctor decides that it is safe, then you may have to use a different type of medicine to treat your condition."
Fuhrman noted that there is no "black box" warning or clear warning on the drug's label. So the FDA will be reviewing the drug for safety.
According to the FDA, there are a number of other things that could be taken that have the potential to cause serious adverse events. For example, Cialis could be associated with liver problems, especially in women. If Cialis is prescribed to a woman who is taking a nitrate, for example, liver problems could be a risk. Also, if a patient is taking a nitrate, for example, heart failure, the patient's health could also be at risk.
Dr. Michael DiSalvo, chair of the FDA's Office of Drug Safety, said that the FDA's statement was "very important."
Michael DiSalvo said that "we are evaluating whether the potential risks for patients with PAH are related to the use of tadalafil."
DiSalvo explained that the drug is being evaluated for safety in patients who are taking tadalafil and has had heart attacks, strokes, or other heart-related conditions since the drug was first approved in 2003.
In this case, the FDA would need to evaluate whether Cialis could be associated with the risk of a heart attack or a stroke that has already occurred.
The FDA also noted that there is a high degree of uncertainty regarding the risks of cardiovascular events in patients taking tadalafil. So there could be a greater risk of these events for patients who are taking tadalafil compared with those who are taking the standard treatment for PAH, or who have had a heart attack or stroke.
